Overview

The Oncology Financial Navigator will be responsible for providing financial services for oncology patients and families. The position will assess financial needs of new and established patients and utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to treating financial toxicity. The position will serve as the patient’s point of contact for medical insurance, government programs and external assistance programs. The position will also provide patients and the healthcare team with education, links to resources and aid in data collection. 

Qualifications

Education:

 

1) Bachelor’s Degree in finance, business, counseling, social work or nursing required
2) Master’s Degree preferred.


Experience:

 

1) Minimum 2 years of experience in acute care setting working with the financial needs of patients, preferably with an understanding of cancer care and treatment.
2) Experience with Medicare health plans, COBRA regulations, Medicaid guidelines, PAP and co-pay assistance programs.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

 

1) Possess strong research and problem solving skills.
2) Demonstrates a high level of initiative and ability to self-direct to solve financial problems of patients, while frequently working collaboratively with the cancer treatment team.
3) Ability to grasp, retain, and apply new regulations and procedural changes, both within the organization and to outside agencies.
4) Complete understanding in the application of health insurance benefits to hospital and professional charges.
5) Working knowledge of Medical Terminology
6) Extensive knowledge of community resources and financial programs to assist patients.
7) Excellent interpersonal skills required to interact effectively with patients, their families, members of the treatment team, other departments within the facility and external agencies.
8) Excellent organization, time management, conflict resolution and negotiation skills required.
9) Demonstrates attention to detail.
10) Ability to effectively communicate with newly diagnosed cancer patients who may be very emotional, angry, overwhelmed, etc.
11) Ability to utilize Meditech, software and other telecommunication equipment needed to do the job.
12) Ability to work in a high volume, high caseload environment
13) Ability to prioritize and effectively deal with rapidly changing priorities.

 

License/Certification/Registration:

 

1) Licensed as a social worker in the state of PA, preferred.
